Backflow preventer repair and replacement cost

Published installed prices for a new 3/4 or 1 inch backflow preventer run $699 to $1,046 for an RP (3 sources); $599 to $1,179 for a DC (2 sources); one published price of $499 for a PVB. A repair visit or rebuild runs $99 to $200 plus parts in the two price lists that print one. Every figure links to the business, utility or city that published it, and we show ranges, never an average.

Full replacement prices by device type

These are installed prices, printed by the business or utility that charges them. A utility price means the utility itself puts the assembly in (Fallbrook does it with a new meter); a business price is what a contractor charges to swap a failed assembly. Ranges below run from the lowest to the highest published price, with the number of sources behind them.

Reduced pressure (RP), 3/4 or 1 inch: $699 to $1,046 (3 sources).

Double check (DC), 3/4 or 1 inch: $599 to $1,179 (2 sources).

Pressure vacuum breaker (PVB): only one published price, $499 (Affordable Backflow Testing, Winter Garden, FL). One price is too thin for a range, so none is shown.

Prices printed without a clear device type ($650 to $1,600, 1 source) are in the table as printed and are left out of the type ranges.

Larger assemblies (1 1/2 and 2 inch): $1,286 to $1,857 from 2 utility schedules, both for utility installs. No business on this list prints a price for a commercial size.

Repair and rebuild prices

When an assembly fails its test, the fix is either a repair (new rubber parts, springs or a relief valve inside the same body, then a retest) or a new assembly. Two businesses on this list print repair prices.

A repair visit or rebuild runs $99 to $200 before parts in these price lists (2 sources); single parts such as a test cock, disc or spring run $10 to $25.

Repair kits: what the parts cost

A repair kit is the rubber and springs inside one assembly, sold by brand, model and size. Online parts retailers print list prices, and these are the parts only: the tester's labor, the trip and the retest come on top. Parts generally do not interchange between brands, so the kit must match the assembly's model and size.

RP kits for 3/4 to 1 inch assemblies: $68.22 to $362.47 (2 retailers).

DC kits for 3/4 to 1 inch assemblies: $68.22 (1 retailer, so treat it as one data point).

PVB kits for 3/4 to 1 inch assemblies: $144.72 (1 retailer, so treat it as one data point).

Hourly rates for backflow repair

Published hourly rates for backflow repair run $100 to $377 an hour (3 sources). The low end is a residential irrigation company in Missouri and a California city's on-call contract; the high end is a park district contract in Ohio for repairs on vaulted devices. Parts are extra in all three.

Permit, filing and retest fees

Cities charge plumbing permit fees for backflow devices, and utilities want a passing test on every new or repaired assembly. These fees come on top of the contractor's price.

Plumbing permit and filing fees for one backflow device run $24 to $81 on the city schedules here (4 sources); Gig Harbor adds a $34 fee to issue each permit.

Where the utility does the test itself, a retest after a repair costs $42 to $45 (2 utilities). If a private tester did the first test, ask whether the retest is in the price.

Repair or replace?

Worn seals, springs and check parts can be replaced inside the same body. Sprinkler Doctor, a Denver irrigation company, says rubber seals and moving parts wear out over time and can start leaking or failing under pressure.

A crack in the brass body means a new assembly: the body can no longer hold pressure. Sprinkler Doctor notes that outdoor assemblies sit above ground, exposed to freezing, and that water trapped inside over winter can crack them.

Old models can be hard to repair because parts are scarce, and when the same assembly has needed several repairs, replacing it may end the repeat visits.

On age: one parts retailer says an RPZ can last 10 to 15 years with maintenance, and a Florida tester says most units fail somewhere between 10 and 20 years.

After a failed test: the rules that add cost

Every repaired or replaced assembly is tested again before it counts. Portland's water bureau says so in plain words, and Ohio EPA's manual says repaired or replacement units must pass the standard test before they go back in service.

Utilities set deadlines. Boulder, Colorado wants a failing test reported within 24 hours and, if the repair takes more than 30 days, a compliance plan.

Some utilities want approval before a replacement. Portland requires its water bureau's approval first, and Nashville says a replaced device must be moved to meet its current installation and access standards.

Phoenix requires a test report for every replacement of a backflow preventer, the same as for a new install.

Common questions

How much does it cost to replace a backflow preventer?

For a 3/4 or 1 inch assembly, published installed prices run $699 to $1,046 for an RP (3 sources) and $599 to $1,179 for a double check (2 sources); the one published PVB replacement price is $499. Add a plumbing permit and the test after installation.

How much does a backflow repair cost?

In the two price lists that print one, a repair visit or rebuild costs $99 to $200 plus parts. Repair kits for 3/4 to 1 inch assemblies list at $68.22 to $362.47 at online parts retailers; labor is billed at $100 to $377 an hour in the published rates.

Does a backflow preventer need a test after it is repaired or replaced?

Yes. Utilities such as Portland's require a new test after every repair, and a replacement needs a passing test report before it counts as compliant.

Do I need a permit to replace a backflow preventer?

In many cities, yes. The city permit and filing fees for one device on this page run $24 to $81. Some utilities, such as Portland's, also want their approval before the work.
