WSSC Water: backflow testing rules

Who must test
- Testable backflow prevention assemblies must be tested annually, as mandated by the WSSC Plumbing and Fuel Gas Code. Source.
- Examples of testable applications include lawn irrigation at homes and businesses and medical equipment; Chapter 5 of the WSSC Plumbing and Fuel Gas Code has the full list. Source.
How the report is filed
- Field test results must be submitted electronically through the WSSC Water Cross-Connection Test Report (CCTR) system. Source.
- Registered cross-connection technicians must submit reports electronically within 30 business days of the test. Source.
Tester registration
- Only WSSC-licensed, registered journeyman or master plumbers who are also certified cross-connection technicians may test and repair backflow assemblies. Source.
- First-time cross-connection technicians take a course of at least 32 hours, good for three years; recertification is an 8-hour course, also good for three years. Source.
- The automated tracking system allows no grace period; technicians must hold current certification and be registered with the WSSC licensing department to submit reports. Source.
