City of Tampa Water Department: backflow testing rules

Who must test

• Devices are required where the Water Department identifies a backflow potential, including all commercial, industrial and multi-family facilities, properties on both potable and reclaimed water, properties with a well or pond, and in-ground irrigation. Source.
• Assemblies are tested at least annually on commercial service connections and every two years on residential service connections. Source.

Notices and deadlines

• Customers who receive the City's Notice to Test Backflow Prevention Device must have a certified technician test the device within 30 days of receiving the letter. Source.

How the report is filed

• Certified test results must be submitted to the Tampa Water Department online via SwiftComply within seven calendar days of the test date. Source.

Tester registration

• Certified testers request a SwiftComply Backflow user account online; login details arrive by email within 48 hours of registering. Source.
• Testers must be registered with the City of Tampa and re-certified every two years; test equipment must be recalibrated annually with the calibration registered with the City. Source.

Approved testers

• The City publishes a list of certified testers registered in its SwiftComply database, without endorsement. document page, format not checked). Not downloaded. Source.

If a test is missed

• A defective device must be serviced or replaced within 15 days, then retested with results sent to SwiftComply. Source.
