Indiana American Water: backflow testing rules

Who must test

• All non-residential customers must install an approved backflow prevention device where state rules require it and have it tested annually. Source.
• All customers with lawn irrigation systems, including residential, must use a pressure type vacuum breaker or a reduced pressure principle backflow preventer. Source.
• All customer fire service lines are on the state hazard list; a double check detector assembly should be used. Source.
• Inspection is required annually on all backflow devices (RP, double check and pressure vacuum breaker assemblies). Source.

Notices and deadlines

• After a failed test is submitted, the customer is notified through BSI Online and has no more than 30 days to repair or replace the device and submit a passing result. Source.

How the report is filed

• Backflow device test submittal is handled by Indiana American Water's vendor BSI Online (bsionline.com, 1-800-414-4990). Source.

If a test is missed

• Failure to submit a passing test could result in termination of water service; the program page says disconnection follows repeated requests from the Cross Connection Department. Source.
