South Bend Water Works: backflow testing rules

Serves South Bend, IN. Every point below comes from South Bend Water Works's own pages, linked; check your notice for your own deadline.

Who must test

  • Any business with a possible hazard to the public water supply, and any residence with an irrigation system, must install, maintain and regularly test a backflow prevention device. Source.
  • The utility requires containment with a device on the downstream side of the meter and requires a reduced pressure principle device for facilities with a cross connection hazard. Source.
  • Devices in place for hazards must be tested after installation, after any repair, and at intervals no greater than one year; the utility may require more frequent testing. Source.

How the report is filed

  • Test reports go to the utility and the customer after each test, by email to Backflow@southbendin.gov or by mail to the Backflow Prevention Program. Source.
  • Both the utility and the customer must keep testing documentation for at least three years. Source.

Tester registration

  • The utility links customers to the IDEM list of Indiana certified testers rather than a utility list. Source.
